BMW R100
Cafe Racer Project #02
From the outside the R100 RT looked like it was in a good condition, but as soon as we started to disassemble it, 32 years of wear and tear started to show. The good news in this that it looked like nobody tried to fiddled with the inner parts, except the electric system, but we are going to replace that anyway.
The bike were completely disassembled, properly cleaned and examined.
For the delicate parts we used cleaning fluids and scrubbed them with a brush to avoid small particles getting stuck in the system. Other parts were cleaned by blasting machines.
Parts that are exposed to high temperature have received heat resistant paint, others were powder-coated. We used stainless steel for the sheetmetal parts and aluminium for other milled, custom parts like the ignition key housing, rear light housing and the front stabiliser/mudguard holder.
The engine, carburettors, forks, drive and brakes were completely rebuilt. We replaced the worn out parts, gaskets, bolts, springs and bearings. The air filter box was removed and replaced by a nice curved aluminium cover to emphasise the shape of the engine and clean the area under the seat. New exhausts and headers were fitted that are nicely frame the lower part of the bike. We also fitted a new subframe to achieve a minimalist solo seat, bobber look.
The fuel tank went trough a complete overhaul. We removed the paint and checked if there were any holes or leaking. Fortunately it was in a good condition. A specialist cleaned the inside and treated it with a special paint to prevent it from corrosion. It has received its final form in a paint shop, finished in light blue with orange stripes.
Even though this a modification, our aim was to keep the classic style, keep it tasteful and respect the original. So we kept the original controls on the handlebar and managed to make them work with the new electronic control panel. The bike was completely rewired. The new lithium battery is hidden under the gearbox where originally the exhaust collector were.
After the final technical examination carburettors and timing were calibrated to maintain a smooth and steady run.
